Rationale

Sable and Argent for Christ's Passion and Resurrection, the Argent being over the Sable to show life conquering death. She-bears represent ferocity and dedication to the protection and care of children as well as the active/contemplative life. Two to represent spiritual as well as physical protection, the two natures of Christ, and dedication to the holy things of God as seen in the prophet Elisha's life. They are rampant to show the zeal of this life, addorsed to show that they guard and protect, and regardant to show their focus on what is guarded, always reminding them of why they guard. They hold quills, a symbol of obedience to just authority, to represent the weapon with which they protect, the Scriptures of the God of Israel and the tongue as sharp as a sword. The quills also represent linguistics, my area of study. The quills are erect, as they always point upwards to God. The labara represent Christ and coming from the Greek language represent the Septuagint and the New Testament; there are five to represent Christ's five Holy Wounds and the five human pillars of the Church (Mary, Peter, John, Paul, James). The 12-pointed mullet and crescent represent Mary as the Woman of Revelation; they also recall the "dark night of the soul" through which every holy soul must travel on the road to perfection, the beauty of the natural creation, and as a reminder that we are to be "a light in the darkness." They indicate faith (Genesis 15:5), hope (Numbers 24:17), and love (Psalms 8:30) the three theological virtues.
