Rationale
The armiger's ancestry is one-fourth from Alsace-Lorraine/Elsass-Lothringen (Johannes/Reiter//Schmitt) and three-quarters from Ireland (Cassidy/Daugherty/Callaghan//Radigan/Scott). (John Vincent Cassidy was 1/2 Irish, 1/2 Alsatian. Margaret Daugherty Cassidy, his wife, was 100% of Irish ancestry.)
The basic design rationale for these arms is to produce a new set of arms which a) provides a link to past family heraldry without infringing upon existing armigers, b) reflects both the Irish and Franco-Germanic portions of the family ancestry, and c) is of a design which remains fairly simple and in accord with the varied heraldic traditions involved. Secondary design considerations include a desire to take note of historical and more recent family commitments (e.g., the nautical heritage of the family, a commitment to world peace) without burdening the design unduly.
The tinctures, Argent and Gules, are taken from the colors of Alsace-Lorraine and from the Ó Caiside and Ó Dochartaigh sept arms. The concept for the ordinary (a chevron counterchanged) was adapted from another known Cassidy achievement. The four charges represent, respectively, the Johannes (cockle shell), Cassidy and Schmitt (lion rampant with hammer), Radigan (sea-horse), and Daugherty (stag salient) families.
