Design rationale

The shield displays the Dominican cross, heritage of the College, and the blue and silver arms of Bavaria, Germany, origin of the Dominican Sisters of the Holy Cross, Amityville. The black lion between three red trefoils is from the coat of arms of Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy, for whom the College was named. The crest is composed of a book adorned with a Marian golden crown. Both book and crown symbolize the Catholic tradition.
