Rationale

The symbols in the arms derive from alleged but undocumented traditions of paternal inheritance. The arms combine differenced Polish and German eagles into one, and further difference the composite eagle with a modified Slavic crescent, and with an escutcheon showing the Croatian chessboard pattern altered to German colors. (Coincidentally, the emblem of the Friendship Fire Company of Bressler, Pennsylvania, near Reading, where the armiger was born on February 16, 1936, includes the Croatian chessboard pattern.) An escutcheon is used occasionally in heraldry for simple differencing, with no implication of marshaling for claims of inheritance or possession.

The escutcheon with its chessboard pattern also represents the armiger's career in symbolic analysis. Dr. Bressler worked as a physicist in government and industry, and was an adjunct professor of physics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. In this context, the eagle displaying the escutcheon represents an analyst using vigilance and impartiality in observing, evaluating, and presenting conflicting evidence. As the armiger carries away a brief record of life humbled by chance, choice, and time, so the eagle spreads its wings to fly away with its small escutcheon.
