Design rationale

The shield has a geometric pattern that I chose for style alone. Beyond the cross, a symbol of Christian faith, there is no specific meaning behind it.

The crest is an archer wearing a tunic colored in the same pattern as the shield. He is holding a crossbow and standing in a tower. This refers to our family legend that "Carnell" means "archer" or "crossbowman." Notches on top of castle walls, like the ones on this tower, are called "crenels", so at the very least this crest is a cant or pun on our name. Next to the archer is a black flag with a white cross, the traditional flag of Cornwall, which may also be the origin of the family name (and if not, it is another cant on the name).

Altogether, the black, red, and gold of the shield and crest suggest Germany, my ancestors' country of origin.
