Organization information

The inaugural meeting of the Henry Dunster Society of the Bury Grammar Schools was held at Harvard University in September, 2008. The Society is named for Henry Dunster (1609-1659), an alumnus of the Bury School. Dunster went up to Magdalene College, Cambridge, and subsequently became Curate of Bury Parish Church and the third Headmaster of the Bury School. In 1640, ahead of the English Civil War, Dunster emigrated to Massachusetts, where he was offered and accepted a position as the first President of Harvard College, now Harvard University. The Society exists to bring together from time to time alumni/ae of the Schools who live outside Britain, and to help them support new School initiatives. The arms of the Society join those of the Schools with a ship symbolizing Dunster’s journey to America.
