Biographical information

Born 1741 Philadelphia, Pa., d. 2 Feb 1809 Fayetteville, NC bd. Cross Creek Cemt. No. 1 Fayetteville, NC R.S. (DAR). Lewis was a signatory of the "Liberty Point Resolves."

Design rationale

The surname Barge is derived from the German word for “birch;” the three silver birch leaves represent the three states (PA, NC, GA) of the US where he lived; the blue and white saltire represents Cross Creek (Fayetteville, NC) where Lewis Barge began his business career, lived during the American Revolution, and where he signed the “Liberty Point Resolves;” the whiskey barrel and keys are reminders that he began his business career as both a tavern and an inn keeper; and the motto refers to his signing of the Resolves.
