Biographical information

Dennis Elwin Roe was born on October 10, 1944 in Providence, Rhode Island. While a child, he and his mother moved to South Florida. He attended and graduated from Florida State University after six years (when his mother threatened to cut off his education funding unless he graduated). During the Vietnam War he joined the Navy, and was stationed stateside for his tour. After the Navy he moved back to South Florida with his wife and new son. There he indulged his passion for singing by throwing himself into singing with the Church Choir and joining a Barbershop Chorus. Over the next few years he sang with the chorus and with a Quartet of some moderate success. In 1984 he had back surgery and, due to complications, received contaminated blood. In 1989, at the age of 45, he succumbed to AIDS. He was survived by his only child, his son, who still hasn't gotten over the loss.

Design rationale

The primary charge on the shield is a bit of heraldic humor in the form of a cant—a famous comedian once wrote that “The Great Roe is a mythological beast with the head of a lion and the body of a lion, though not the same lion.” The four clarions allude to my father’s love of music, singing, and the four-part harmony of barbershop and choral singing. The field, Gules with a Chief Azure, mimics the arms of Paris, and my father’s name means “named for St. Denis, the Patron Saint of Paris.” The Argent, Gules and Azure mantling harkens to the traditional colours associated with barbershop singing. The badge uses four clarions linked together to evoke four-part-harmony singing he was so fond of.
