Biographical information

Patrick Meskel was born in County Waterford, Ireland in 1843. His first wife died after giving birth to one daughter. He was married a second time Alice Murray (who was born in County Tipperary, Ireland on March 14, 1841 and died June 4, 1906) in Auburn, N.Y. in February 13, 1866, after arriving in and getting married in NY he moved the family first to Iowa and then to South Dakota where he was a rancher and farmer. He and Alice had 4 daughters and 6 sons. He died August 23, 1886.

Design rationale

The family is of Irish origin. The family comes from County Waterford, Ireland. The root of the name in Irish is misce, which can mean either 'one who is intoxicating', or 'to intoxicate'.

So the ancient Irish drinking vessels are a play on this meaning of the root of the name in Irish and the lymphad is symbolic of County Waterford, which is the family's place of Irish origin.

Note

Armiger's great-grandson, Claude Eugene Meskel, had these arms designed for him in his memory and for his descendents.
