Organization information

The Episcopal Church is one of 38 self-governing churches or provinces in the world-wide Anglican Communion. The Episcopal Church comprises 100 domestic dioceses and 13 overseas dioceses.

Design Rationale

The red cross on a white field is the St. George Cross, a reference to Church of England. The cross crosslets in the blue quadrant symbolize the nine original American dioceses that met in Philadelphia in 1789. The St. Andrew's Cross formed in the blue quadrant is a tribute to the Scottish church's role in ordaining the first American bishop, Samuel Seabury, in 1784. The colors red, white and blue symbolize the sacrifice of Christ and Christian martyrs, the purity of the Christian faith, and the humanity of Christ received from the Virgin Mary, and they are also the colors from the American flag.
