Historical note

One of the most fascinating men of his time, Governor Jonathan Belcher (1682-1757), the colonial governor of Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire, and New Jersey, was a highly influential figure in the early history of America. Governor Belcher held together the colonies during one of the most important times in American history — just before the American Revolution. At the same time, he made many contributions to American society, not the least of which is Princeton University, now one of America’s leading ivy league universities.

Belcher's coat of arms served as a template for the Great Seal of the United States.
