Historical note

LeAndra Marcelle's winning design for Du Bois College House is beautifully complex, with a book, peacock, and tree in the shield. The book represents the pursuit of knowledge; the peacock stands for dignity; and the tree represents family -- with roots clearly visible to reflect strength. The shield interior is comprised of African national colors -- black, red, and green -- while the border is blue and white with a wave pattern. These waves represent House members: ripples building to waves that together make a strong impact. The blue and white of the border also complement the red to signify America. Finally, the House motto, "It Takes a Village," is imprinted on a scroll below.
