Yale website: http://www.yale.edu/td/about/arms.html
As described in the pamphlet The Residential Colleges of Yale University, "The arms were probably invented by Jacob Hurd, a Boston silversmith, who engraved them on a tankard which he made in 1725 for Colonel Timothy and Experience Dwight, grandparents of the elder of Yale's two Timothys. For the College, the red of the chief, the only color indicated on the tankard, was used for the lion and cross as well. Pierre la Rose made the first sketches for the arms at the suggestion of the Secretary of the University in 1934. The design generally used is by the hand of Fritz Kredel."
