Design reationale

The arms of Elihu Yale, the East India merchant and benefactor after whom Yale College is named, are featured on the upper portion of the school's arms. The upper arms consist of an ermine field, white with small black stylized tails and the red cross of St. Patrick, called a saltire. The lower portion of the arms has a green background, the academic color for medicine, with a single Aesculapian serpent, which also signifies medicine.
