Design rationale

Selection of the specific devices appearing on the shield as well as the crest were left to the expertise of the heralds of Ireland. The petitioner made only two requests: (1) that the arms represent good heraldry and (2) that they be identifiable as of Irish origin in honor of his paternal grandfather, an immigrant from Ireland to the United States in 1860. The black boar was assigned to the shield as one of the strongest heraldic symbols of Ireland. The red mullets and bars recognize the armiger's lineal descent on his maternal side from Lawrence Washington, an armiger and immigrant to colonial Virginia.
