Design rationale

The tinctures Sable and Or reflect the mixture of temperament of the subject, the lion's head calls to mind his trademark lion-headed cane, and the eagles are a homage to his mother's surname and refer to an old coat borne by one Baddifforde, though not known to be any relation. The Crest refers to Wolf Branch, the stream which bisected the farm where he was born.
